The Legend of HouYi And The Moon Festival

1201

Many people may already heard of the Moon Festival is a traditional Chinese festival celebrating the 15th of the eighth month in lunar calendar. However like many other Chinese traditional festival there are many legend stories related to the Moon Festival. The legend of HouYi and Chang’e is one of the most famous legend story relating to this very festival.According to Chinese legend, there were ten suns appeared in the sky at the same time in the ancient China. People were struggling not only because of the heat, but also the crops getting dried up by the suns and hence affecting the each year’s harvesting. At this very time an extremely powerful figure, HouYi (后羿), was born. He climbed to the top of Kunlun Mountain (崑崙山) and shot down nine of the ten suns with his bow and arrows, and strictly allowed the remaining sun to rise at a set time for the benefit of all people.Because of this heroic action, HouYi was sent an elixir by the Goddess. However HouYi was reluctant to take it and left it with his wife Chang’e (嫦娥). However one of his disciples knew this secret and broke into his house on the 15th of the eigth month in lunar calendar tried to steal it from Chang’e. Chang’e refused to give up the elixir and swallow it. Immediately her body floated off the ground and flew to the sky. She chose the moon for her residence so that she can see her husband from high above. When HouYi returned and found out the truth, he was sadden by the fact his beloved wife has flown to the moon. As a result he displayed fruits and cakes in his yard on this date every year to remember his beloved wife. This year Manchester Moon Festival teamed up with Wolfpack Adventures to setup a game store in the middle of Manchester China Town. You can test your archery skills with the help of our instructors, and see if you can be the hero just like HouYi did to shoot down nine suns to restore the World’s balance and peace.
